BreakDown: Single Ladies Season 2, Episode 1

So with all of the excitement of Memorial Day, I wasn’t able to catch Single Ladies until today. I was kind of apprehensive when I sat down to watch it because my sister told me that it was so boring, she fell asleep! YIKES! LOL! Regardless, I plopped down on my bed this evening with a plate of barbecued leftovers coupled with an appetite for some fictionalized drama. To summarize briefly, the episode picks up supposedly only 2 weeks after the craziness of last season. Keisha (LisaRaye McCoy) and April (Charity Shea) are attending the engagement party of Keisha’s childhood friend, Raquel Lancaster(Denise Vasi). Halfway through the dinner party, Raquel walks in on her new fiance getting it in with some random and calls off the engagement promptly. If this wasn’t enough to keep viewers watching, the next day Keisha and April get an e-mail from Val (Stacey Dash), stating that she would not be returning home to Atlanta from Milan….EVER!!

Both girls are heartbroken, however, Keisha’s frown is soon turned upside down when her long lost boyfriend, Malcolm (D.B. Woodside) turns up to offer some kind of explanation for his whereabouts the past couple weeks. Apparently, he is NOT the FBI’s target but merely a means to an end. The police are actually after the mayor of the city (Common) who has been bribing and extorting money from Atlanta business owners for years. Unfortunately, Malcolm and his ex-wife were victims of the bribery which was why they had been working so closely together recently. They’ve been trying to evade the cops! Malcolm assures Keisha that as soon as his ex has situated herself out of the FBI’s reach, he will turn himself in and be exonerated. Keisha believes him, and the two make up. However, soon after, Keisha is arrested for tax evasion and subsequently, blackmailed into giving Malcolm up in exchange for her freedom. Raquel hires Keisha’s ex to help her out of her legal trouble, and the two, Keisha and her ex, have a moment. Malcolm does end up turning himself in, however, and Keisha is allowed to go free. Whew!!!! Keisha’s life is hot right now!! Um….I’m forgetting someone….oh yea April!! Um…she’s fine! Lol, she’s divorced and loving the single life! Let’s hope her story line heats up a little though…

Read more on my opinion of Episode 1, Season 2 of Single Ladies after the jump……
Ok so firstly, that opening scene with the Tango….I almost started to change the channel. I felt like we were in an MTV Hip Hopera with all that elaborate dancing and witty but yet “naturally rhythmic” conversation. It made me uncomfortable. LOL! But moving on, I think Denise Vasi is gorgeous as Raquel Lancaster. I definitely don’t think that she has the same fluent screen presence and je ne sais quoi as Stacey Dash, but her beauty more than makes up for it, plus her character is just so sweet and innocent. I also think Vasi is still accustomed to her soap opera past. Her lines seemed a bit too rehearsed….I’m hoping as the season goes on, things will start to flow better for her. I’m also gonna say that although she had some cute pieces on, I think Stacey Dash was killing the game the last season in EVERYTHING she wore so the stylists on the show better step it up and QUICK!

Similar to Vasi in the acting department is LisaRaye, but we all know this about LisaRaye. Her acting leaves something to be desired, and the writers of Single Ladies seem to play right into that, giving her lines that, in my opinion, are pretty cheesy. What did she say to Rick Fox on the dancefloor? I think it was something like: “While your looking through my past, make sure you look for another dance partner because it takes TWO to TANGO!”  Cue dramatic music and strong sexy walk off the dance floor. Like I said before, it just made me uncomfortable. However, I love the spunk and attitude LisaRaye brings to each character she plays.  Her character might be a little cliche, but she adds some flavor to the cast. We can all appreciate that.

April, I must say, was pretty low key this episode.  She’s kinda just there for me.  There was no mention of her ex-husband and apparently her and Reed broke up. Let’s see…what can I say about April?? She’s a cute girl, and I like her lacefronts!!! Lol other than that, I hope we see more of her character unfold this season.  I also hope that the men get a little bit finer because I wasn’t really impressed other than that fine chocolate thang that was in April’s wet dream!!! (Sidenote: I like that April has an affinity for men of color…keeps things interesting!)
Nevertheless, I give this episode of Single Ladies a strong C+…..I was hoping for a little bit more pop, but I do see there is definite potential for improvement. I will be watching next week’s episode and weighing in again.  I hope all of our readers watch too…let’s compare notes!  Let me know if you agree with me or if you think I’m just being a hater!! Promise I won’t get mad (wink, wink)!
