Sensationalizing Homosexuality or Proving a Point? Rapper Murs Kisses Another Man In Music Video

After the world went crazy over Frank Ocean’s candid letter via Tumblr, revealing his sexuality and the attention it received, it seems that everyone else has decided to embrace the LGBT community. All for a PR ploy, conversation or genuine support for gay rights, Murs, a LA rapper, has decided to jump on the bandwagon and voice his opinion in supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage and gay rights.

In “Animal Style,” the video below, Murs plays Roderick, the closeted 17-year-old boyfriend of Jonathan, who is an openly gay high school student. Roderick was popular, didn’t want to got to go to prom with Johnathan and over all shamed him in public all because Roderick was uncomfortable with his sexuality. The couple are shown being affectionate and even sharing a brief kiss before a suicidal ending.

In the video, the closeted/down-low boyfriend Roderick (played by Murs) away from school was affectionate but battled his religious beliefs and shame of his sexuality which he could never overcome…

Catch the video below featuring Murs and his reasoning for creating the song after the jump!

“‘Animal Style’ is a song I did for many reasons,” Murs explains. “The first was to be an advocate for people close to me who are out, and those who have yet to come out…I wanted to challenge the listener to ask themselves: Is the love shared by two people of the same gender, really that different than the love I have for my partner of the opposite sex?”

“I just felt it was crucial for some of us in the hip hop community to speak up on the issues of teen suicide, bullying, and the overall anti-homosexual sentiment that exist within hip hop culture. I felt so strongly about these issues and this song that I had to do a video that would command some attention, even if it makes some viewers uncomfortable.”

I can respect and appreciate his open support, fearlessness and security in his own skin, however, I raise an eyebrow because it seems everyone ALL of a sudden have an opinion and want to speak out on homosexuality and gay rights…

Call me a skeptic if you will, but let’s be honest, when was the last time you were checking for Murs on Itunes? Ploy or genuine support?
