We all think it’s so cute to watch our favorite celeb wives and girlfriends bonding with their men courtside at a Knicks game or sidelined watching the Patriots play. Their beaus seem to be in heaven, laughing, giggling, sharing secrets, overjoyed to be combining the two things they love most: women and sports.
Although I love catching glimpses of celebrity couples at these types of events, I have always been baffled by women who are overly knowledgeable on the subject of men’s sports. I never know whether to commend them for understanding the difficulty that is RBI’s, first downs, and free throws or to question their motives for feigning interest in male-dominated sporting events, wondering if they are only vying to gain the attention of the opposite sex. Despite certain women’s incentives for learning and participating in predominantly male sports, it seems that these women have an advantage over the rest of us. MEN LOVE A WOMAN WHO LOVES SPORTS! Most men agree that it’s a pleasant surprise for them when a woman admits that she is into sports. It gives them something to talk about with us, since sports seem to be such a big part of most men’s lives. Women who love sports are quiet when the big game is on and cheer when their man’s favorite player scores the winning touchdown. In a lot of men’s eyes, women who love sports are perfect!
So what do us ladies who fall short of perfection do when we are unable to deciper between the ninth inning and the fourth quarter or when we get Tim Tebow confused with Tim Duncan?? Well my athletically-challenged ladies, YOU ARE IN LUCK…and just in time for the NBA Playoffs!! In searching the internet this morning, I came across Vibe Magazine’s article on the “Top Three Things Women Should Know about the NBA Playoffs,” and piggy-backing off of what Vibe already started, I conversed with some of my more athletically-inclined male friends and came up with the ”Top 10 Things Women Should Know About The NBA Playoffs.” I’m hoping it will help….check the list out after the jump…
Know that….
1. Playoffs are starting late.
Each team only plays 66 games this season, compared to the regular 82, because of the NBA lockout. The playoffs will extend longer into June, due to the setback (Vibe).
2. Only 16 teams make Playoffs.
Playoff games are separate from regular season games. The top eight teams from the west coast and the top eight teams from the
east coast are chosen for playoff games. They compete against each other by rank in a seven game series–highest versus lowest, best four out of seven. This means the no. 1 team on the West plays the no. 8 ranked team on the West, the no. 2 team plays the no. 7 team, and so on. Same goes for the East. When both coasts are down to its last team, they face each other in the NBA Finals (Vibe).
3. Know who has home court advantage.
Teams with the better records have home court advantage, but home court advantage is only applied if the series reaches its seventh game. The lowest ranked team, at max, has a chance to play at their home court three times. The highest ranked team, four (Vibe.).
4. Understand the series.
Always be aware of what series the playoffs are in. Western? Eastern? Which round?? ESPN or NBA, http://www.nba.com/playoffs/2012/series/, are great references for this information.
5. Check scheduling.
Be sure to know when your man’s team plays next. Most NBA playoff games show on TNT so this is as simple as checking your T.V. guide and then, texting your man something passive-agressively sexy like: “Baby, hurry up and get home. The game comes on in 30 minutes!”
6. Know which teams are actually in the playoffs and who plays who.
7. In addition to knowing teams, know players.
Every team has its’ star(s). If possible, take the time to learn the starters’ names on each team. Now ladies, this may not be as easy as learning the names of your favorite basketball wives, but trust it will pay off! Here’s a couple of freebies: Chris Paul pays for the Los Angeles Clippers, and Kobe Bryant plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. (Sidenote: Yep! L.A. has two teams, and they are BOTH in the Playoffs!)
8. Never ask your man a question while the game is on, and if you absolutely positively must, keep it to a minimum!
For your man, the playoffs are like the Victoria Secret Runway Show, the season finale of RHOA, and the reunion episode of Bad Girls Club all rolled into one. They live for and breathe this time of the year so let them have their moment. If you must, keep your Ipad or laptop handy so you can quietly search any questions you may have on the Internet. That way you’ll look knowledgable also.
9. Know which websites are your friend!
As aforementioned, you may have questions that your man may be reluctant to answer, or you may just want to bulk up on info before the big game so you can surpise your man with the immense knowledge you possess on his favorite team and/or player. Some good (and easy) sites to peruse are www.nba.com, www.espn.com, and www.bleacherreport.com.
10. Keep refreshments readily available.
So ladies, by this point, you should be a pro at the playoffs. You should be able to commentate from the sidelines. You should be able to talk shop with the veterans…lol ok not really, but you should be able to at least understand what’s going on in the game. That’s great!! However, don’t ever let your man forget one of the reasons he fell in love with you: YOUR HOMECOOKING! Make sure you whip up something good for your evening in, casually watching the game. Whether it’s chicken wings, french fries, or burgers, your man will be eternally grateful. You now have all three ways to his heart covered: sports, food, and the third you can work on after the game!
HAPPY BASKETBALL-WATCHING LADIES!!!!
